JUNE

The rest of your vegetable starters should be planted now. This includes tomatoes, squash, zuccini, all peppers, and corn. If we were planting from seed, which we will do later, you would have started these seeds last month.

At this point all of your vegetables are planted, and your garden is beginning to flourish. June is the time to tackle the wild tomato. Tomatoes grow tall, and wide. When they start to reach maturity, they become unstable. The tomato plant will grow, then topple under its own weight. It’s our job to prevent this. You don’t want to have the fruit laying on the ground. The tomatoes will rot quickly if they aren’t supported, and suspended in the air. There are several approaches to dealing with this. I like to use tomato cages. Heres a big hint. Even though your tomatoes don't yet need the support, buy the cages now. If you wait until the tomatoes are toppling over, you're too late. Not because the fruit will be damaged, no, its because every other first time gardener is waiting also. If you wait, I promise you every garden center in town will be sold out of cages. You should avoid the headache. Buy now, you will need them shortly. Most of June is simply a waiting game. You have to maintain a good steady supply of water. Weeding the garden is important, you don’t want weeds sucking up your soils valuable nutrients.

On the topic of water supply, June is a great month to buy a rain barrel. If your feeling adventurous you can build one youself. Here is an excellent how to video from the folks at HGTV.
